REDWOOD CITY, Calif., July 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- In a newly released Optical Transport forecast report by Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the networking and telecommunications industries, total optical packet product revenues are forecast to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19 percent over the next five years, approaching $11 billion by 2017.
"We believe optical transport equipment deployments will be driven by two main factors," said Jimmy Yu, Vice President of Optical Transport Market Research at Dell'Oro Group. "The first will be the need to increase network capacity as economically as possible, which will drive the need for 100 Gbps DWDM wavelengths. We forecast 100 Gbps DWDM wavelength shipments to grow at an 80 percent CAGR. The second factor will be the need to transport packets more efficiently as data and video traffic dominate the network, driving the move towards Optical Packet Platforms," added Mr. Yu.
Optical Packet Platform systems consist of three technology segments—Optical Packet-Transport, Optical Packet-Switch, and Optical Packet-Core Switch. Optical Packet-Transport systems are used for high capacity bandwidth management and transport, while Optical Packet-Switches are used for deterministic Ethernet services, and Optical Packet-Core Switches are used for network meshing and protection.
