DR. J. HUNT UDALL OFFERS ALTERNATIVE TO NON-HIP REPLACEMENT CANDIDATES IN ARIZONA HEALTHCARE SETTING

PHOENIX, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Abrazo Media Relations-- The Center for Pediatric Orthopaedics and Scoliosis (http:// www.pedsorthopaedics.com) located in Mesa, Arizona announces the addition of orthopaedic surgeon Dr. J. Hunt Udall to its practice.

Dr. Udall is trained in sports medicine and orthopaedic surgery after recently completing his fellowship training at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts where he focused on adult and pediatric orthopaedic sports medicine. He specializes in arthroscopy and minimally invasive surgery for hip, shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle injuries. Dr. Udall takes a particular interest in hip injuries and is one of a few doctors in the Valley trained in hip arthroscopy for management of labral tears and femoracetabular impingement; the same procedure has been performed on several Major League Baseball players during the 2009 season.

Hip arthroscopy is a procedure that combines the benefits of being a minimally invasive procedure with a short rehabilitation period. Rather than cutting open the entire hip with a large incision, precision instruments and a camera are inserted into the hip joint through tiny incisions to make surgical corrections. If necessary, hip arthroscopy allows for future surgical interventions without much compromise to the joint.

According to Dr. Udall, "Hip pain has traditionally been mislabeled by clinicians as 'groin pulls' or 'muscle strains'. Within the past few years medical knowledge of hip problems have helped specialists to understand that groin pain often has an underlying problem (femoracetabular impingement or labral tears) with the bone or cartilage of the hip. In addressing these problems with minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures, symptoms of pain and discomfort can be alleviated and we believe that this may prevent future arthritic changes and prevent larger surgeries such as total hip replacements."

J. Hunt Udall, M.D. received his medical degree from Louisiana State University in New Orleans, completed his residency at the University of California Irvine Medical Center, and completed his fellowship at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts. While completing his residency, Dr. Udall was nominated for the prestigious Neer Award, which recognizes outstanding clinical investigation contributing to the understanding, care or prevention of injuries to the shoulder and elbow, for his research on the effect of flexor-pronator muscles on valgus stability of the elbow.

Dr. Udall is a resident member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and has presented original research at national meetings, including the Shoulder and Elbow Society open meeting.
