OTG Software Launches DiskXtender Database Edition - First Solution To offer Transparent Access at Application and Query Level

New Product Provides Enterprises with Virtualized

Database Storage that is Scalable to Petabytes

ROCKVILLE, Md., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- OTG Software Inc. (Nasdaq: OTGS), a
leading provider of online data storage, data access and email management
solutions, today announced its new, patent-pending storage management and
access software for databases -- DiskXtender(R) Database Edition (DXDB). DXDB
offers a powerful solution to the problem of explosive growth of many
enterprises' large databases, such as Oracle 8i. OTG's solution virtualizes
database storage, reduces total cost of ownership and provides transparent
access to both frequently and infrequently accessed data.
Database administrators face multiple challenges, including meeting user
demand for access to large quantities of data, and increasing database
performance, reliability and disaster recovery capability. DXDB enables
administrators to address these requirements by integrating any combination of
certified storage media into a robust storage management and data access
solution. DXDB leverages OTG's storage virtualization technology for UNIX to
provide a logical, segment-level view of stored data, enabling seamless end-
user access without changes to queries or applications.
"OTG Software's DiskXtender Database Edition is revolutionizing the way
data warehouse growth is addressed," said Bill Inmon, noted data warehousing
expert, in his whitepaper 'Cost Effectively Extending Your Data Warehouse to
Infinity with Near Line Storage.'(1) "Possibly the most extraordinary aspect
of the product is that it accomplishes its task while providing 100%
transparency to the database / data warehouse."
"Information is the lifeblood of business, and access to mission-critical
information in databases is critical for a company's survival," said Richard
Kay, president and CEO of OTG Software. "OTG's latest storage management
solution, DXDB, helps enterprises immediately access critical information
stored in databases. This solution is aimed at industries that rely on being
able to access information when it is needed most, including
 telecommunications, healthcare and financial services."
Transparent Access to Virtually Infinite Database Storage
DXDB delivers a highly scalable, online storage solution allowing
administrators to expand their database storage capacity virtually without
limitation, to multi-terabyte and petabyte levels with true, query-level
database transparency. Since DXDB does not require modifications to database
structures or schema, users can access all of the data, no matter its age or
the frequency of its use, without any changes to SQL queries or applications.
In addition, DXDB can improve business intelligence application effectiveness
by providing a proven, cost-effective means of expanding online data access.
This is most useful for organizations that use predictive models where
accuracy is a critical component to the success of the model.
     Increased Database Performance and Reliability
DXDB can aid system and database administrators in increasing database
performance and reliability by moving infrequently accessed data within
database tablespaces to high capacity, cost-effective storage devices, while
maintaining one virtualized view of the database. When infrequently accessed
data is queried, the system retrieves the logical segments relevant to that
query transparently to the user or application. Migration of infrequently
accessed data reduces backup and recovery time, and can improve query
 performance for active data.
     Enhanced Disaster Recovery
Disaster recovery ability is dramatically improved by storing archive redo
log headers on disk, while the rest of the file is on tape or optical media.
This, and other DXDB performance enhancing features, can reduce database
recovery time from days to hours. An optional DXDB module provides additional
disaster recovery capabilities, such as writing additional copies of the data
to virtualized storage in remote data centers. Finally, a snapshot capability
allows the administrator to make a point-in-time copy of the DXDB filesystem,
directory, or individual files and move it to another, possibly remote,
database instance for secure storage and accessibility of data.
