Pearle Vision's Shared Sight(TM) Eyeglass Collection Program to Aid Underprivileged People Worldwide
Pearle Vision and New Eyes for the Needy making a visible difference
CLEVELAND, Ohio, April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Your old eyeglasses can make a world of difference. They can help someone do their job, perform daily tasks and see their world more clearly. Stop by any Pearle Vision location and donate your old eyeglasses to Shared Sight(TM), Pearle Vision's eyeglass collection program. It's that simple. Pearle Vision and the Pearle Vision Foundation have partnered with New Eyes for the Needy over the last several years to provide eyeglasses to underprivileged people with vision needs throughout the world. As part of its 40th anniversary celebration, Pearle Vision is strengthening its commitment to this worthy cause. Starting this May, special Shared Sight(TM) collection receptacles can be found in Pearle Vision stores nationwide. Individuals and groups are encouraged to donate their old eyeglasses, reading glasses, sunglasses and prescription sunglasses to people who desperately need them. Pearle Vision collects the eyeglasses and sends them to New Eyes for the Needy, where they are recycled and distributed to charities, medical missions and hospitals in more than 30 countries around the world. New Eyes for the Needy also assists underprivileged people in the U.S. by providing vouchers to be used to purchase new prescription eyeglasses. "Sometimes the only thing separating someone from seeing clearly or not seeing at all is a pair of eyeglasses," said Mauri Buchanan, president of New Eyes for the Needy. "We are grateful to Pearle Vision and the Pearle Vision Foundation for their continued support of the organization." Since 1993, Pearle Vision and the Pearle Vision Foundation, a non-profit organization, have worked with New Eyes for the Needy to provide corrective eyewear to those in need. The Pearle Vision Foundation recently awarded a $28,000 grant to New Eyes to aid in the purchase of new prescription eyewear for approximately 1,000 people across the U.S. through its eyeglass voucher program, bringing the total grants awarded to this organization by the Foundation to nearly $200,000. In recent years, Pearle Vision stores have collected nearly 150,000 pairs of used eyeglasses for New Eyes for the Needy. "We're delighted to continue our partnership with New Eyes for the Needy and help people see more clearly," said Dr. Jeff Smith, Pearle Vision Foundation chairman. "It's extremely gratifying to work with an organization that assists so many people worldwide and that truly makes a visible difference in their lives." New Eyes for the Needy, located in Short Hills, New Jersey, is a non- profit volunteer organization whose mission is to help provide better vision for underprivileged people throughout the world. Since its inception in 1932, New Eyes has helped nearly six million visually impaired people in many foreign nations, as well as all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
