Pennsylvania Office of the State Fire Commissioner Receives Prestigious Fire Safety Leadership Award

HARRISBURG, Pa., May 2, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- At a ceremony in Washington, D.C. yesterday, State Fire Commissioner Ed Mann accepted the 2014 Senator Paul S. Sarbanes Fire Service Safety Leadership Award.

The Office of the State Fire Commissioner (OSFC) was recognized for ongoing commitment to safety in the fire service in Pennsylvania.

"Since I became state fire commissioner in 2000, my top priority has been the safety and well-being of every member of the fire service in Pennsylvania," said Mann. "Governor Tom Corbett's ongoing commitment to public safety has made it possible for us to offer even more training across the state, and I'm very proud of the efforts of my staff and our trainers to protect the people of the commonwealth."

In 2005, OSFC launched the "Courage to Be Safe" program in Butler County. That curriculum served as a model when the program was later launched nationwide, and is still being used today.

Mann also shares the "Everyone Goes Home" message when he travels across the state, stressing the need for firefighters to take it upon themselves to make safety a priority.

The Senator Paul S. Sarbanes Fire Service Safety Leadership Award was created to encourage fire departments and associations across the nation to help reduce the number of firefighter deaths and injuries. It is co-sponsored by the Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI) and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF). The award recognizes organizations for their outstanding contributions to firefighter health and safety.

OSFC was one of two recipients of the 2014 award; the other was the Oklahoma Council on Firefighter Training and INTEGRIS Heart Hospital for a partnership which developed the Healthy Heart Program.
