P&G Celebrates Successful Completion of Three Life-Saving Commitments by Launching the 'Live, Learn and Thrive Partnership Awards' During the 2009 Clinton Global Initiative
P&G Awards CARE, PSI, UNICEF and World Vision for Improving the Lives of Millions of Children Throughout the Globe
CINCINNATI, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE: PG) honored partnerships that have helped the company achieve three life-saving commitments at their "Live, Learn and Thrive Partnership Awards" event. Held at a VIP reception in conjunction with the 2009 Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) in New York City last night, the Awards recognized partners CARE, PSI, UNICEF and World Vision for their help in improving the lives of more than 40 million children, by providing vaccines and safe drinking water to help those in need.

At last year's CGI conference, P&G unveiled a $55 million investment in three commitments that saved lives by providing clean drinking water, funding in support of UNICEF's campaign to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, and helping one million vulnerable girls in Africa remain in school. This year, actor and PSI Ambassador Molly Sims, renowned journalist Paula Zahn, former U.S. Senate Majority Leader William H. Frist, M.D., notable musician Kenna and actor Dania Ramirez joined President Clinton to celebrate the completion of these commitments and to recognize these organizations for their help and dedication to achieving these life-saving goals.
Each award recipient did their part in helping P&G reach these substantial goals as part of the Company's philanthropic Live, Learn and Thrive program including:
- CARE: partnered with the P&G Safe Drinking Water Program to reduce diarrhea and absenteeism in school children in Kenya by providing safe drinking water with the PUR packets. In nearly 70 countries around the world, CARE works to end global poverty by empowering marginalized women and girls to bring lasting change to their community.
- PSI: partnered with the P&G Safe Drinking Water Program to provide more than 200 million liters of safe drinking water to vulnerable populations in Ethiopia. PSI has been providing safe drinking water using the PUR packets since 2004, responding to cholera outbreaks and floods.
- World Vision: partnered with the P&G Safe Drinking Water Program to provide safe drinking water and address the cholera crisis in Zimbabwe. World Vision provided more than 20 million liters of safe drinking water to 200,000 people using the PUR packets during the largest cholera outbreak ever recorded in Zimbabwe.
- UNICEF: partnered with Pampers for the global "One Pack=One Vaccine" campaign to help provide funding for more than 200 million tetanus vaccines to combat maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) in the developing world. Every three minutes, MNT claims the life of a newborn baby and to-date, Pampers has helped UNICEF protect millions of women and their newborns against this deadly but preventable disease in developing countries around the world.
Not only is P&G celebrating the successful completion of these three commitments, but they also are recognizing two new commitments. The first is the launch of the Future Friendly program where the Company will be placing P&G Sustainable Innovation Products in 30 million U.S. homes by the end of 2010. This supports their larger, previously announced goal of $50 billion in cumulative sustainable product sales between 2007 and 2012. The second commitment provides four billion liters of clean drinking water to save an estimated 20,000 lives from water-borne illness by 2012. Both multi-year commitments will help P&G on their continued mission to improve the lives of thousands of families across the world.
"Serving communities globally and locally is part of our DNA and we are so proud of all our partners who have helped us reach such considerable goals," said Dimitri Panayotopoulos, vice chair of Global Household Care. "The theme of this year's P&G reception is 'Promises Made and Promises Kept' as we not only celebrate how much we have achieved, but also recognize our future promises and goals that will make a substantial difference in our lives."
