PGP Corporation Scholarship Awarded to Oxford Internet Institute (OII) Students

LONDON and MENLO PARK, Calif., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ - PGP Corporation, a global leader in enterprise data protection, has announced the recipients of the 2010 PGP Corporation Oxford Internet Institute (OII) scholarship.

Michael Hill, who was admitted to the OII in 2008 and achieved the highest coursework grades in his year intake, has been awarded a PGP Corporation scholarship for the academic year, 2009-2010. He was delighted with award, saying "This scholarship will undoubtedly be a huge help in my research efforts. It's great to see companies like PGP Corporation, acting generously and taking an active role in encouraging the development of this research area."

The second recipient, Hanteng Liao, also welcomed the award and said that "I'm very proud to have been awarded this prestigious scholarship, which will be vital to the completion of my work. I hope now to justify PGP Corporation's faith in me." Hanteng, a Taiwanese student with a multi-disciplinary background, is entering his third year at the OII.

PGP Corporation has been the benefactor of these scholarships for the past three years. Based on academic merit the scholarships are awarded to high-calibre students to pursue individual projects in the OII's doctoral program.

"Internet research is fundamental to the advancement of technological innovation and understanding; therefore we recognise the importance of encouraging and supporting the individuals carrying out these pioneering projects," said Phillip Dunkelberger, president and CEO of PGP Corporation. "With the guidance of the OII, I'm confident that Michael and Hanteng will deliver valuable research."

Michael will be undertaking an important study of the relationship between digital literacy training and civic participation as well as assisting with a project on digital free speech rights and online child protection. Hanteng will be attempting to determine how national linguistic, political and cultural norms are reflected in the online user-contributed encyclopaedias Chinese Wikipedia and Baidu Baike, and how this in turn might reinforce national boundaries and even nationalism.

Prof. William Dutton, Director of the OII, expressed his gratitude towards PGP Corporation for their ongoing support, stating that, "In order to continue to produce research of the highest standard, we must be able to attract the academically brilliant. Therefore we're thankful for the support from organisations such as PGP Corporation, which allows us to provide excellent funding packages, crucial to our offering."

The OII's doctoral programme is offered to students wishing to undertake groundbreaking, detailed study of the Internet and its social impact. It aims to provide them with the qualities and transferable skills necessary to excel in teaching, research, policymaking, or business in their studied fields, including the ability to design new technologies, to predict and analyse their impacts, and help realise their potential across all sectors of society.
