Physician Executive Compensation Recovers with Economy: Slowly
Cejka Executive Search and the American College of Physician Executives Release the 2013 Physician Executive Compensation Survey
ST. LOUIS, Nov. 14, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Physician executive compensation growth over the last two years remained slow, reflecting the reality of an ongoing economic recovery and the uncertainty of health care reform, according to the Cejka Executive Search and American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) 2013 Physician Executive Compensation Survey.
While health reform implementation has accelerated demand for physicians in clinical, operational and administrative leadership roles, the 7 percent compensation growth rate from 2010 to 2012 is essentially unchanged from the rate of growth reported in the 2011 survey (6 percent between 2008 and 2010).
As self-reported by 2,364 physician executives, median compensation grew an average of 7 percent between 2010 and 2012 to median compensation of $325,000 across all 19 titles and 26 organization types.
"The survey delivered strong indicators that pay will continue to depend on organizational performance, scope of responsibility and attainment of a post-graduate management degree," said Lori Schutte, MBA, president of Cejka Search.
Key Highlights
- Performance: In the C-Suite, chief executive officers (CEOs) reported the smallest two-year gain (4 percent) perhaps reflecting the reliance of their pay packages on organizational financial performance during an economically and politically uncertain period.
- Scope: CEOs of regional organizations serving multiple sites earned 16 percent above median.
- Training: CEOs with a Master in Business Administration in addition to a medical degree earned 28 percent higher compensation than those without a post-graduate business management degree.
"The demand for physician leaders continues to grow each year in every segment of the health care industry," said Peter B. Angood, MD, FRCS(C), FACS, FCCM, chief executive officer of the American College of Physician Executives. "This year's survey illuminates the opportunities for physician leaders who are prepared for and passionate about leadership opportunities."
