Planned HBO Movie 'Candybomber' to Sell Vintage DC-4 Aircraft Through Hollywoodparts.com
HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- A Pair of vintage WWII aircraft carefully restored to star in an HBO film Candybomber, are looking for a new home! Hollywoodparts.com, a production asset management and movie prop broker has been selected to find a home for two Douglas DC-4 Skymasters. These WWII era flying and operational aircraft were carefully brought up to mechanical specifications to make the long journey from the US to England where many WWII aircraft were being gathered for the movie Candybomber.
The Candybomber was actually a US Pilot post WWII, Gail Halvorsen, who was flying the sturdy Douglas C-54 (DC-4) during the 1948 Berlin airlift and after befriending German children, began dropping small bags of candy tied to handkerchief parachutes as he flew food and supplies into Berlin which was isolated by the Russians. Soon word of the Candybomber spread throughout the military and back to the US where soldiers, school children and candy companies started sending candy of all types to Gail to drop to the German children as he waggled his wings to signal when the plane unloaded its sweet cargo.
"It's a great story, and these Douglas DC-4s were going to star in the film," states Mike Filonczuk, Exec VP of Operations and Development at Hollywoodparts.com. "These planes are some of the largest movie props we have handled. It is just a shame the film didn't get made, but we are happy to find a new home for the DC-4s," laments Mike.
The two Douglas aircraft are powered by 4 Pratt Whitney engines with low operational hours and spent their early years in different service as one was a military C-54G and the other was a civilian DC-4. Both Aircraft will be readied to make the return flight to the US unless they are sold to a buyer elsewhere in the world. The planes are valued at around $400,000.00 each, but under the right circumstances, perhaps another movie, these fine and dependable aircraft could end up in your hangar.
