Pratt & Whitney's F119 Engine Powers F-22 at Farnborough Air Show
FARNBOROUGH, England, July 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- FARNBOROUGH AIR SHOW -- Attendees of the 40th Farnborough Airshow are in for an amazing display of aerospace technology and performance when the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor performs every day of the show. The Pratt & Whitney F119 engines, powering F-22, have surpassed more than 300,000 hours. Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) company.
"Seeing the thrust capability of those two Pratt & Whitney F119 engines as they power the F-22 Raptor through its aerial demonstration, is truly amazing," said Bennett Croswell, Vice President of F135 and F119 Engine Programs. "This combination of thrust and vectoring nozzles allows the Raptor to perform maneuvers which clearly illustrate why the F-22 is the most capable advanced, air-superiority fighter in the world."
The F119 is the only operational fifth generation fighter engine in service today and is the most successful fighter engine ever fielded. The F119 shares its mature, proven core with the F135 engine, the only engine powering the F-35 Lightning II. The common technology derived from the proven F119 offers a significant advantage to the F135 with respect to maturity and single engine safety.
"Pratt & Whitney is proud of the exceptional record of the F119, and the experiences and capabilities demonstrated by the F119 will deliver built-in maturity for the F135 engine," Croswell said.
The two F119 engines powering the F-22 Raptor deliver unparalleled aircraft maneuverability, operational performance and reliability. The F119 features an unrivaled combination of stealth technologies and vectored thrust with high thrust-to-weight performance. The F-22's ability to operate supersonically without afterburner, known as supercruise, gives the F-22 exceptional combat performance without compromising mission range.
Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines. United Technologies, based in Hartford, Conn., is a diversified company providing high technology products and services to the global aerospace and commercial building industries.
This press release contains forward-looking statements concerning the operational prospects for certain engines and, accordingly, the potential for future business opportunities. Actual results may differ materially from those anticipated as a result of certain risks and uncertainties, including but not limited to changes in the USAF's funding related to the F-22 aircraft and F119 engines, changes in government procurement priorities and practices or in the number of aircraft to be built; challenges in the design, development, production and support of technologies; as well as other risks and uncertainties, including but not limited to those detailed from time to time in United Technologies Corporation's Securities and Exchange Commission filings.
