Also known as gingival recession, the main cause of gum recession is gum disease due to inadequate brushing and flossing, while overly aggressive brushing can also result in receding gums.
If gum recession is left untreated, a patient can experience tooth loss, cavities in the roots, loss of a firm collar of tissue around the neck of the tooth, tooth sensitivity to cold drinks or hot foods and undesirable aesthetics such as looking long in the tooth.
Featuring a Celebrity Smile Analysis in the inaugural issue, Brilliant Doctors Magazine surveyed a representative sample from approximately 5,000 Periodontists currently practicing.
Unaware they were examining a photo of President Obama, the survey presented the President's smile photographed by Yuri Gripas during the White House Correspondents Dinner on April 25, 2015. The survey asked each Periodontist to provide a diagnosis based on the cropped photograph of the President's smile only.
Nine and a half out of 10 Periodontists diagnosed President Obama with gum recession on tooth #7 and tooth #10. The doctors representing the "½ Periodontists" responded by declaring it appears to be gum recession and gum disease although they could not commit to a diagnosis from only a photograph.
The inaugural issue of Brilliant Doctors Magazine features board-certified Periodontist Dr. Jason C. Stoner in an article entitled The Gums Whisperer in Columbus, Ohio. Besides being experts in replacing missing teeth with dental implants, Periodontists are often considered the plastic surgeons of dentistry.
"Working closely with some of the nation's leading doctors, dentists, surgeons and hospitals, we decided to launch a new magazine that offers authoritative insight, news, opinion and in depth profiles of the brilliant doctors that treat and help patients everyday," said Joseph Preston, co-editor-in-chief and co-founder of Brilliant Doctors Magazine. "The goal of Brilliant Doctors Magazine is to redefine the evolution of patient education for consumers and business intelligence for doctors."
"With 'distraction' being the number one competitor to all doctors trying to attract new patients, we are delivering an upscale magazine in the spirit of the Robb Report, duPont REGISTRY and Vanity Fair but focused on the health industry...a magazine that clearly separates the 'brilliant doctors' from the 'I'll fix anything for $99' doctors," said Phillip Guye, co-editor-in-chief and co-founder of Brilliant Doctors Magazine. "In my 20 years experience in helping doctors grow their practices, I do not at all believe in the online review platforms such as Yelp, Angie's List, Vitals and Healthgrades. Both positive and negative review manipulation is at an all-time high. It sickens me that fake negative reviewers also known as competing doctors, disgruntled former employees or ex-spouses can post anonymous, realistic-sounding, one-star reviews and not be held accountable for destroying the medical or dental practices of perfectly honest, hard working and totally innocent doctors. That's called 'libel' where I come from."
According to the Harvard Business Review, the US Federal Trade Commission and CNBC, studies have found that as much as 30% of online reviews are fraudulent.
As stated by the American Academy of Periodontology and recent findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), half of Americans aged 30 or older (more than 64 million people) have periodontitis, the more advanced form of gum disease, which causes receding gums.
