Pro Ana and Thinspiration Sites Under Attack Sites discussing the Pro Ana and thinspo lifestyle find them self under attack by bloggers and social media.
LOS ANGELES, July 10, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Over the past several weeks and months there has been an intense effort to block or ban all sites that discuss Pro Ana in any form or that provide Thinspiration pictures or stories. The claim is that sites like that promote dangerous conditions such as anorexia and bulimia, otherwise known as Pro Mia.
The premise is that they encourage, support and instruct on how to continue with these conditions and we put peoples lives at risk.
After some research I can counter that argument and argue that the critics obviously are not taking the time to actually READ some of these blogs or look at many of the Thinspiration pictures being posted.
Here are some arguments FOR allowing these sites to exist-
The 1st is, while on a crusade to save people from themselves are you going to start campaigning against sites that show smoking, skydiving, bungee jumping, drinking and eating foods with high fat content? All of those also promote unhealthy or dangerous activities!
Just because someone follows a Pro Ana Diet or they view Thinspiration images does NOT make that person anorexic! One thing people suffering from anorexia know how to do is to lose weight, that is a fact. The difference is despite the amount of weight that is lost, they desire to continue to lose weight. That is not the case for everyone. Think about bodybuilders for a moment, MANY abuse steroids, which has proven to be dangerous, yet it is undeniable that they are experts at what they do. You CAN follow their program and advise while avoiding the dangerous habits that they use to supplement their lifestyle. The same is absolutely true with some Pro Ana sites.
Has anyone bothered to look at the images or testimonials on these site? Much like any other blind obsession, it is a very dangerous action to paint all sites, people, nationalities with the same broad brush. This mindset breeds ignorance and hate! Take a look at the articles on this page or visit the images on the site and show me one time that we support a dangerous lifestyle.
Have naysayers tried contributing anything of value to help those suffering from these conditions? One thing that is counterproductive is people who like to promote ignorance and stand on soap boxes but then do nothing to help or to contribute to these perceived problems. On these site, which many would like to have banned, they discuss use common sense, practicing safe techniques, we even provide proof or good results, we provide resources to improve your body and health, we discourage unsafe practices. What do most of the critics do? Blindly complain and demand censorship.
Anorexia has been a condition that has affected many people well before the advent of the internet, just because you see it now does not mean it is any better nor any worse than it has been in years past. The fact that you now see it and it is visible does not mean that websites have caused it or keep it alive. In fact there should be MORE sites with this topic so we can get this type of information out to the masses. Then we can help those that need it yet still take advantage of providing good information and resources to those with a healthy body image who simply desire to lose some weight. Being overweight is every bit as dangerous as being underweight, no one is blasting sites that glamorize "Big Beautiful Women" or "Plus Size Women"!
The bottom line is in the information age people should be allowed to read and decide for themselves what is best for them.
Here is an example of a page that actual did Pro Ana surveys to find some answers- http://www.examiner.com/article/pro-ana-thinspiration-what-is-it-fact-and-fiction-guide and the writer even goes on to review the 30 days to thin book.
Just like with any diet, fad or program it is best to get multiple views from multiple sources, humans were created with logic and common sense that can then be used to make sound decisions.
