Prominent Attorney Willie Gary and Team File $100 Million Lawsuit on Behalf of Victims of Catastrophic Metrorail Crash

STUART, Fla., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Prominent attorney Willie Gary and associate attorney Alton Hale of the Florida-based law firm Gary, Williams, Finney, Lewis, Watson, and Sperando, P.L. along with co-counsels Keith Watters of Keith Watters and Associates announced that they will be representing Ivey Epps and her mother, Bernea Bell, in a lawsuit (case # 2009CA004670B) against the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

The legal team contends that Ivey and Bernea were victims of negligent inspection by the Washington Area Transit Authority, who they claim did not properly maintain, repair, and inspect the brakes on the Red Line metro train. As a result, the victims sustained severe and painful injuries when their train unexpectedly collided into another metro train. The suit argues that the Washington Metropolitan Transit authority failed to remove the aforementioned railcars from service, in spite of the fact that the Defendants had knowledge that they were not suitable for passenger travel due to the faulty safety equipment. As it is the Defendant's duty to ensure that the operations of the trains are up to appropriate standards and passenger safety is fully guaranteed, the Defendant is being held accountable.

"This is a very sad and unfortunate occurrence," stated Attorney Gary. "Hundreds of people rely on the public transportation system in the DC area and it is a trusted mode of transportation. It is up to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority to take the necessary steps and precautions to ensure that the passengers are safe. They owe it to those who rely on them to keep the passengers safe," continued Gary. The National Transportation Safety Board had urged Metro to replace or overhaul the cars more than 13 years ago because officials did not believe the cars would survive a collision.

Gary is no stranger to seeking justice. He is noted for winning $240 million jury verdict in Orange County against the Walt Disney Corporation for his clients who alleged Disney stole their idea for a sports theme park. In 2001, a jury awarded Gary a $139.6 million verdict for the Maris Distributing company against Anheuser Busch. In addition, Gary won a record-breaking half-billion dollar verdict in Jackson, Mississippi against the Loewen Group, a large Canadian funeral home chain.
