Proposed Tauzin-Dingell Legislation to Put Competition Out of Business

    WASHINGTON, April 24 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- The
following statement may be attributed to Barbara A. Dooley, President of the
 Commercial Internet eXchange Association:
As the nation's oldest and largest Internet-related trade association, the
Commercial Internet eXchange is dismayed at the introduction of so-called
"broadband relief" legislation by Chairman Tauzin (R-LA) and Congressman
Dingell. The Internet Service Provider (ISP) industry has led the way in
bringing Internet access and services to consumers across the country --
especially in the more rural and underserved areas left behind by the massive
Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs). The RBOCs have always had the
ability to serve these markets -- they just aren't interested. And despite
the best efforts of Congress to open up the critical last-mile, the Bells have
managed to destroy all challengers at every turn, making access to the local
infrastructure basically impossible. Now Congress has just decided to give
up, rather than stand up to these giant monopolies. This legislation, which
claims to remedy the challenges of rural broadband deployment, will
unfortunately achieve the exact opposite result. By relying on the empty
promises of 4 monopolies, Tauzin-Dingell will succeed only in putting
 competition out of business.
