QUALCOMM and Ubixon to Bring Consumers First Direct View MEMS Displays for Mobile Devices
LONG BEACH, Calif., May 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- QUALCOMM MEMS
Technologies, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of QUALCOMM Incorporated
( QCOM), and Ubixon Co., Ltd., a developer of ubiquitous portable
consumer devices, today at the 2007 Society for Information Displays (SID)
International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition announced an agreement to
integrate QUALCOMM's Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) displays into
the next generation of Ubixon Bluetooth(R) stereo headset products.
QUALCOMM MEMS displays are a technology breakthrough that promise
substantial performance benefits over competing display technologies. The
reflective displays, based on Interferometric Modulation (IMOD) technology,
require no backlighting and can be viewed in bright sunlight and in a wide
range of environments. Moreover, these displays offer a significant
reduction in power consumption as compared to other display technologies,
while extending device battery life and enabling new features. IMOD
displays work by reflecting light so that specific wavelengths interfere
with each other to create pure, vivid colors. The phenomenon that makes a
butterfly's wings shimmer is the same process that gives IMOD displays
their color.
MEMS technology uses semiconductor-like and thin-film manufacturing
processes to produce tiny and highly reliable mechanical devices such as
sensors, valves and switches. QUALCOMM(R) MEMS devices have been uniquely
optimized for fabrication on large glass substrates, thus facilitating
their application to direct view displays.
Ubixon is recognized in the marketplace for its distinctive line of
consumer electronic devices, such as the world's first Bluetooth headsets
with integrated 3D sound technology.
"We are excited to work with Ubixon toward the common goal of
delivering innovative solutions to end users," said Dr. John Batey, vice
president and general manager of QUALCOMM MEMS Technologies. "With the
delivery of the industry's first direct view MEMS displays, we are
providing technology that enables mobile devices to be used in more
environments and for more hours per charge, thereby enhancing consumers'
user experience."
"Our tradition at Ubixon is to deliver products that raise the bar in
terms of quality and usability," said Su-Tab Choi, chief executive officer
of Ubixon Co., Ltd. "In working with QUALCOMM MEMS Technologies and its
unique displays, we are continuing that tradition by taking the user
experience to the next level."
QUALCOMM MEMS Technologies was formed to take a leadership role in the
development of display technologies for the full range of consumer-targeted
mobile products. Using advanced MEMS technologies, QUALCOMM MEMS
Technologies products reflect QUALCOMM's overall innovation strategy of
increasing the capability of mobile devices while minimizing power
consumption requirements. QUALCOMM MEMS Technologies is headquartered in
San Diego, Calif., with offices in San Jose, Calif. and Hsinchu, Taiwan.
SID participants are encouraged to stop by booth #2041 to see live
demonstrations of QUALCOMM MEMS displays. To learn more about QUALCOMM MEMS
