Worlds fastest realtime 3D accelerators for games available at

Babbage's and Software Etc.

Jun 09, 1998, 01:00 ET from Quantum3D, Inc.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Quantum3D(TM), the leader in
PC-based realtime 3D solutions, announced that its eagerly awaited
Obsidian2(TM) S/X Consumer line of realtime 3D graphics accelerators began
shipping this week. Designed to deliver high-speed, compelling 3D graphics,
Obsidian2 meets the demands of game enthusiasts who want the most realistic 3D
experience possible. The Obsidian2 S/X Series features four different models-
the largest family of Voodoo2 based products.
"Damn these cards are fast!" said Kelt Reeves, president of Falcon
Northwest, a leading manufacturer of PCs for game enthusiasts. "Last year
with Obsidian I thought Quantum3D had reached the peak, but the Obsidian2 is
the new standard-everyone has been left in the dust."
Signing Babbage's Etc. as its first national retail outlet marks the first
time Quantum3D Obsidian2 products have been made available in the retail
channel to consumers. Additional retailers are expected to sign on in the
coming weeks, and volume shipments are expected to increase rapidly.
"We expected Obsidian2 to be popular, but the demand for product has been
phenomenal," said Rick Bess, vice president of marketing for Quantum3D."
Quantum3D professional realtime 3D products have been purchased in large
numbers by consumers looking for the fastest, high quality performance at high
resolutions, so we've developed and priced a product line especially for
 consumer enthusiast with Obsidian2."

Fastest Game Board Ever - GameGauge Tests Reveal
Running Computer Gaming World 3D GameGauge benchmark, a new performance
metric developed to test graphics accelerators' real-world 3D game performance
using, Single Board SLI Obsidian2 X-24 achieved a score of 740-the highest of
any product benchmarked to date. The Obsidian2 performance is much higher
than other products tested, including the Diamond Monster 3D II with a 3D
GameGauge score of 558, and the STB Black Magic 3D with a score of 525.

     Twice the Voodoo2 Performance
The X-series products, including the X-16 and X-24, utilize the Single
Board Scan Line Interleaved (SBSLI(TM)) design pioneered by Quantum3D last
year with the Obsidian 100SB(TM) family of professional realtime 3D
accelerators. The Quantum3D SBSLI approach combines two Voodoo2 graphics
subsystems that operate in parallel to provide twice the fill rate performance
of single Voodoo2-based graphics accelerators-without requiring dual graphics
boards (and associated PCI slots) and inter-board SLI interconnection cabling
assemblies. This also leaves more PCI slots available for other add on
boards. This advanced level of engineering enables the X-series models to
sustain 180 Megapixels-per-second of textured fill rate, with perspective-
correct trilinear texture filtering with per-pixel level-of-detail mip
mapping, z-buffering, alpha-blending, and per pixel fog enabled.

     Cool 3D Games
The Obsidian2 line includes more exciting versions of demo games that any
 other 3D graphics accelerator including:
World Cup 98, Longbow2, Need for Speed(TM) II SE, Nuclear Strike(TM) and
Wing Commander:(TM) Prophecy by Electronic Arts.
     G-Police(TM), Formula-1 Championship Edition(TM), Shadow Master(TM),
Shipwreckers!(TM) and Wipeout(TM) XL by Psygnosis, Ltd.
Foresaken(TM) and TUROK: DINOSAUR HUNTER(TM) by Acclaim Entertainment.
     Incoming(TM) by Rage Software.
     Barrage(TM) by Mango Grits.

     Obsidian2 S/X Line
The Obsidian2 product family, consists of four different models, providing
a complete range of price and performance for any gamer. The Obsidian2 "S/X"
models include the S-12, and S-12 AGP each with 12MB of total on-board memory,
and the X-16 and X-24 with 16 and 24MB of memory respectively. All of the S
and X series products are PCI-based except for the S-12 AGP models. All of
the Obsidian2 products also include simultaneous TV-out, providing gamers with
the ability to play games on large screen PAL or NTSC monitors in either
composite or S-video formats. The Obsidian2 models also employ a "VGA pass-
through design" that ensures compatibility with all other popular 2D/3D
 primary windows accelerators.
Quantum3D Obsidian2 products including the S and X series are available at
Babbage's and Software Etc. across the U.S. For direct web sales, visit the
