Rainbow Sash Movement (GLBT Catholics) Asks the Human Rights Campaign Fund to Be Vigilant and Fair About Supreme Court Nominee John Roberts
WASHINGTON, Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Fundamentalists on the right and the
left claim to have the truth about who best can serve their agenda on the
Supreme Court. Joe Murray, the US Convener of the Rainbow Sash Movement (GLBT
Catholics), responds to Human Rights Campaign (GLBT Political Organization)
President Joe Solmonese's recently released statement with a question: What is
more important for a member of the Supreme Court? Integrity or agenda?
Murray further said, "As a GLBT National Catholic organization, we are
heartened by the news that John Roberts provided assistance to the plaintiffs
in Romer v. Evans, the case that overturned Colorado's anti-gay Amendment 2 in
1996. As a Catholic, I hope the stereotype of Catholicism in the GLBT
community is not steering the views of the Human Rights Campaign Fund in this
matter. How can integrity hurt our community?
As a religious organization we do not think it is our place to either
endorse Judge John Roberts, or not. But we do challenge the Human Rights
Campaign to be fair and open minded about Judge Roberts. Do not make his faith
an issue."
Murray further said, "As GLBT Catholics, we call for prayers during this
process. It is our firm belief that human rights are the concern of both
Democrats and Republicans, and there are people of good will in both camps. I
call on my brother, Joe Solmonese, President of the Human Rights Campaign Fund
to be vigilant, but also be fair on the Judge John Roberts issue."
