Raytheon Named Among "Top Green-IT Organizations"
IDG's Computerworld recognizes company for innovative IT practices that reduce energy consumption through operational efficiencies
WALTHAM, Mass., Oct. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has been selected as a top 10 green-IT organization by IDG's Computerworld magazine for 2011. The publication has recognized Raytheon's innovative strategies and practices in information technology that deliver measurable results in sustainability. A feature story on Raytheon's green-IT initiatives is in the Oct. 24 issue of Computerworld.
"Raytheon's IT organization will continue to be a leader and key partner to our other enterprise functions as we work together to meet and exceed our sustainability goals," said Raytheon Vice President and Chief Information Officer Rebecca Rhoads. "This distinction validates our commitment to IT operational efficiencies that enable business growth, and to developing a culture that values sustainability in everything we do."
Raytheon's green-IT program has been the catalyst for various energy-saving initiatives across the company; this year's focus on improving networking and telecommunications infrastructure led to the 2011 Computerworld recognition. The company found energy savings in multiple areas, including:
- Ongoing virtualization or decommission of more than 3,000 physical servers since 2008, resulting in $23 million in annual savings and the elimination of more than 2.1 megawatts of electricity consumption this year alone,
- Elimination of certain hardware requirements in the move toward cloud computing capabilities, and
- Temperature adjustments in company telecommunications closets, decreasing energy use by 30 percent per closet.
