1. Replace your windows
Today's double-paned windows don't look any different from their single-paned counterparts. However, they're a whole lot better at keeping unwanted heat and cold out – meaning that your utility bills are going to look a whole lot better each month! Plus, those historic single-paned windows are getting harder and harder to find. As a result, they're getting more and more expensive. So, if the kids accidentally break a window during a rough-and-tough softball game – and you try to replace it with its original counterpart – you're going to have quite an expense on your hands.

2. Get grounded electrical outlets
This one is a matter of safety (and having your home up to code!). If you plan on selling your home anytime soon, you'll have to make the change if you want it to pass an inspection. But even if you plan on keeping the home for yourself for awhile, you need to think in terms of keeping everyone in it safe and sound. Luckily, grounding your electrical outlets doesn't necessarily mean re-wiring your entire home. In most places, the codes only require that you have grounded outlets in your kitchen and bathroom (and maybe in the garage).

3. Upgrade the foundation
If your home has been standing for the past 50 or 60 years (or more!), it's probably got a foundation made out of cinder blocks, instead of cement. Plus, builders didn't have access to foundation sealer in those days. The problem? Cinder blocks crack more easily than cement does, and without any kind of sealer, those cracks are more likely to fill up with water. As a result, your foundation could be a haven for mold! Yuck! Luckily, though, modern technology can seal those cracks (and clear out any mold that may have formed along the way). That way, your home will be just as strong as it was decades ago – without it looking any different!
