(ISC)2® Officials and Information Security Industry to Recognize First Information Security Practitioner Elected to Congress at Annual Gala Celebration

PALM HARBOR, Fla., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- (ISC)2® ("ISC-squared"), the not-for-profit global leader in educating and certifying information security professionals throughout their careers, today announced that it will formally recognize Rep. Betsy Markey (D-CO), the first federal information security practitioner elected to the U.S. Congress, at the 6th Annual Government Information Security Leadership Awards (GISLAs) on Oct. 7, 2009, at the Marriott Crystal Gateway in Arlington, Va.

The GISLAs are awarded annually to individuals who have significantly enhanced the information security workforce by demonstrating a leadership role in any information security workforce improvement initiative, program or project on either a government-wide or agency-specific basis.

Rep. Markey, who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2008, worked as the chief of the security policy branch for the U.S. State Department beginning in 1984 and was responsible for developing computer security policies and documents covering classified and unclassified systems for the agency's newly formed Office of Information Systems Security. She also traveled extensively around the world to perform systems security evaluations at U.S. embassies and consulates and later received the State Department's Meritorious Honor Award for creating the agency's first computer security training program.

Rep. Markey, who holds a Master's degree in Public Administration and is a former Presidential Management Fellow, is also a co-founder of Syscom Services, Inc., an Internet and Website development firm, which once attained a No. 99 ranking on the Inc. 500 list of America's fastest-growing private companies.

"It is truly an honor to be asked to attend this year's GISLA event and to be in the company of dedicated public servants who are working diligently to further the information security workforce and apply the innovation needed to effectively safeguard our country's critical networks and information resources," said Markey, who is expected to address the audience during the event. "Their effort to lead this industry has never been more important as it is today."

The GISLA celebration will also feature a keynote address by Bruce McConnell, counselor to the Department of Homeland Security's deputy under secretary for the National Protection and Programs Directorate (NPPD), along with the GISLA presentation to four winners and other special recognition honorees.
