Rep. Fattah Will Address Hurricane Forecasters' Group Tuesday
WASHINGTON, March 4, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA-02), the lead Democratic appropriator with responsibility for federal weather agencies, will deliver an address Tuesday morning to hurricane and cyclone forecasters on the challenges and outlook for federal funding of weather-related research.
Fattah will keynote the opening session of the 67th Interdepartmental Hurricane Conference/Tropical Cyclone Research Forum Tuesday at 8 a.m. in College Park, Maryland, at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's Center for Weather and Climate Prediction.
The Philadelphia Congressman is the senior Democrat at the House Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and related agencies, which oversees funding for the Department of Commerce and its weather-related agencies including NOAA, the National Hurricane Center and the National Weather Service.
"With increased satellite coverage, the latest research advances and a roster of talented climate scientists, we have made great strides in forecasting super-storms such as Sandy, where advance warnings save lives and property," Fattah said. "It is critical that we provide our forecasters with the resources they need to prepare and protect Americans for the increasing number of severe weather events we are experiencing."
The three day program will reach several hundred climate scientists and other officials attending both in person and through video conferencing. The forum will review ongoing research within the tropical cyclone research community and discuss priority adjustments such as use of scarce research dollars to address the operational priorities of the nation's hurricane forecast and warning centers.
