Report Details $1.2 Billion in Scholarships and Resources Needed to Support the Children of Fallen and Combat Wounded American Service Members
The first-ever present value assessment reveals urgency for support of the growing cost of post-high school education
NEW YORK and WASHINGTON, Nov. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- No Greater Sacrifice (NGS), a nonprofit foundation, reveals in its Freedom's Future 2011 report that $1.2 billion is required to provide the children of fallen and combat wounded Service members the opportunity to pursue post-high school education.
Through a proprietary economic model based on extensive analysis of government documents, macro-economic projections and educational trends, the report illustrates the high value and growing need for scholarships and resources to support this cause. The analysis included was an in-depth look at families from the past ten years who served in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), and Operation New Dawn (OND).
"Freedom's Future 2011 report outlines the number of children of our fallen and combat wounded Service members and helps focus Americans on the impact of war beyond the battlefield. Our ability to have a solid understanding of the number of children and costs associated with their education can only improve the support for our U.S. Service members and their families," said Colonel David Sutherland, Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff for Warrior and Family Support.
The Freedom's Future 2011 report key findings include:
- The $1.2 billion present value quantification outlined in this report is a demonstration of the importance of NGS's mission and many other organizations including nonprofits, grants, and scholarships. The report brings to the forefront the need for immediate and increased focus on securing educational funding across resources including nonprofits, grants, and scholarships for future financial support.
- From 2001 to present, there have been over 50,000 fallen and combat wounded Service members. The total cost to provide post-high school education for each of the 50,000 children is anticipated to continue to rise at a rapid rate.
"NGS's mission is to honor the sacrifices of our Service members and families by enabling their children's capacity for greatness," said John J. Brown, Chairman of the Board of NGS. "Freedom's Future 2011 report creates a new level of awareness in support for the growing need for educational scholarships and resources."
