* Understand the key epidemiologic risk factors associated with major orthopedic surgery and how it is related to deep vein thrombosis.

Highlights

Datamonitor's epidemiologists expect to see an increase in the number of major orthopedic surgeries between 2010 and 2020 in the seven major markets (the US, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK). The number of orthopedic surgeries is expected to increase from approximately 5,284,000 surgeries in 2010 to 6,556,000 surgeries in 2020.

In 2010, Datamonitor expects that the number of orthopedic surgeries will differ significantly by age group. In the seven major markets, there will be approximately 106,900 surgeries in those under 15, 579,300 in those between 15 and 44, 1,547,400 in those between 45 and 64, and 3,050,100 surgeries in those over the age of 65.

With the exception of heart-related surgeries, hip replacement surgery is the most common surgery among the elderly. It is the most commonly performed orthopedic surgery overall, despite being almost exclusively limited to those over the age of 50.
