Requiem for a Gimmick Diet
OTTAWA, Ill., Sept. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- One of the world leaders in healthy
eating weight loss dieting declared today that "the low carb craze has run its
course."
Seattle Sutton, founder of Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating, which has
helped thousands lose pounds and maintain weight loss while eating healthy
well-balanced meals, cited a "steady influx of scientific studies which
question the real benefits and long-term effects of a strict low-carb diet."
Ms. Sutton said, "I have always considered any gimmick diet to be a
danger, and especially the low carb. So much money has been spent promoting
an out-of-balance way of eating.
"Now science is catching up. Every day I see more studies and articles
supporting the basic premise that a healthy diet is a balanced diet. Anyone
can Google 'low carb' and see that the tide is running out on this bad fad."
For example, in a recent article, The New York Times reported dietician,
nutritionist and doctor concerns about long-term damage from the high-fat
foods that low-carb diets promote. When you eliminate a major food group, the
article reported, you may lose weight, but you'll also lose essential
nutrients. Long-range health dangers are significant.
Interest is waning in the marketplace as well. According to the Wall
Street Journal, sales of "carb-conscious" products rose 42% over the past 13
weeks ... just half the rate recorded in the FIRST 13 weeks of this year.
In re-directing, or "broadening" some product's weight-management issues,
Pillsbury Chief Executive, Steve Sanger, said, "We never thought the low-carb
diet approach was necessarily a good long-term diet approach."
Another company, General Mills, currently has no low-carb products under
development.
Ms. Sutton has long been an ardent opponent of low-carb and other gimmick
diets. "For a while," she said, "I was walking into a stiff wind. No one
would listen, but I did not stop making my points using radio, TV, newspapers,
and my book. It just goes to prove that perseverance is a virtue."
