The projected completion date is October, 1998. This new $20 million construction project parallels an on-going $50 million total refurbishment of the Riviera's 2,071 rooms and suites, casino, public areas and physical facilities. "The construction of our new convention facility and room renovations are just the start of a plan to push the Riviera into the 21st century, while keeping its 'old Las Vegas' appeal," said Riviera President and CEO William L. Westerman. "We have the best property in Las Vegas now and we're going to make it even better." The new facility, which totals 86,000 square feet, will feature 46,000 square feet of exhibit space. Overlooking the exhibit floor, the sky box/hospitality suites range from 540 to 1,300 square feet and can be interconnected to accommodate larger groups. All units have two tiers of 12 theater seats and the 1,300-square- foot boxes will be equipped with wet bars and private restrooms. The new convention/entertainment facility has a total concert seating capacity of 5,700 and can accommodate up to 2,500 for sit-down banquets. Other features include a portable stage, ceiling tech booth, entertainer dressing rooms with full baths, handicapped accessible restrooms facilities on all floors, and a 192-space underground parking facility with elevator access to all floors. The new addition is connected to the existing convention facility and the main hotel buildings by a covered walkway. "The Riviera has always been known for its innovative and aggressive entertainment program and this new facility gives us the tool to bring bigger and better entertainment to our guests," said Vice President of Marketing Robert Vannucci. "Our slogan is 'The Entertainment Center of Las Vegas' and everyone expects us to be the best. Now, with a 5,700-seat theater, we will exceed everyone's expectations." Combined with the existing convention facility, the Riviera offers convention and meeting planners 90,640 square feet of exhibit space, 19 breakout rooms with a total of 21,000 square feet, an additional 17,200 square feet in the 20 interconnecting sky box/hospitality suites and a 15,000 square foot foyer with two registration desks, Business Center and connecting offices, and a full-service banquet kitchen. In addition to the new 192-space underground parking facility, the convention facility has direct access to a 1,600-space covered parking garage. The Riviera totally refurbished the existing convention center in 1993. In addition to new carpeting, wall coverings and lighting, movable wall panels were added to the exhibition space which offers convenience in changing room size. In 1996, the Riviera undertook a $17 million refurbishing plan of all rooms, suites and corridors. The plan, which is nearly completed, called for all 2,071 rooms to be completely renovated, including furniture, lighting, artwork, ceramic tile, marble vanities, bath fixtures, bedding, wall covering, drapes and carpeting. "The result of our total renovation will be a brand new facility with the spacious, comfortable feeling that is inherent in most older properties," stated Riviera Vice President of Construction John Franzoi. "We've incorporated a Mediterranean motif, combining colors, furniture style and Behren's artwork on the walls to reflect the image of the Riviera." Through a systematic maintenance program, renovation and exciting new construction, the Riviera Hotel & Casino is continually working to keep its place as one of the world's finest facilities for visitors, conventions, and meetings.
