Rochester Man Almost Threw Away $1,000 a Week for Life

    SCHENECTADY, N.Y. Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The New York Lottery today
 introduced Carlton Smith, of Rochester, as the 44th winner of $1,000 a week
 for life in the New York Lottery's WIN FOR LIFE Instant Cash Game.
     "I scratched the ticket, looked at the codes, saw the letter code and
 thought that it was a non-winning ticket and was just about to throw it in the
 garbage," said Smith.  "I decided to take closer look and then saw three
 'LIFE' symbols on the play area.  I realized then, that I had actually won
 something big."
     Smith, a Certified Cutter/Grinder, bought his "WIN FOR LIFE" ticket at
 Tops Friendly Markets, 3507 Mount Read Blvd, Rochester.  Smith is the second
 Monroe County winner of
 $1,000 a week for life.  Martin Adams, of Churchville, won in September, 1996.
     Smith will receive the $1,000 a week prize in quarterly payments of
 $13,000, less required federal and state tax withholdings, each year for the
 rest of his life, with a guarantee that he, or his estate, will receive at
 least $1 million.
