Applicants were evaluated in a rigorous two-step process. First, Ryan's application was compared nationally to representative data from the Families and Work Institute's National Study of Employers. Ryan employees, in each of the 14 offices receiving the award, were then randomly surveyed on their access to flexible work options and the supportiveness of the Ryan culture, and compared against nationally tested measures of workplace effectiveness.
