Mr. Zunke's presentation, The Evolution of Software-Driven Hardware, will focus on best practices for unlocking the value of software intellectual property in embedded/intelligent devices.
"Embedded hardware manufacturers are increasingly finding that the value of their intellectual property is in the software they've developed, and because of this evolution, they are facing unprecedented threats to their revenue and profitability," said SafeNet marketing director, Michelle Nerlinger. "There's more to software monetization than just protecting the code from theft and reverse-engineering, though – a comprehensive software monetization strategy controls usage, improves profitability, creates new market opportunities, and improves the user experience. Michael's presentation will teach embedded designers the cutting-edge monetization strategies that software publishers have used to maximize the value of their IP."
SafeNet Speaking Session
The Evolution of Software-Driven Hardware: Best Practices for Efficient, Secure and Profitable Management of Embedded Systems
Wednesday, April 24th, 2-3 p.m., Room 230A
Session Code: VS-100
Software is becoming a more important part of hardware products, especially as they evolve into combinations of off-the-shelf hardware running solution-specific software. Because the value of the intellectual property has shifted to software, system developers are finding that they face the same challenges as traditional software developers – deliberate and unintentional misuse of their code, theft of IP, and licensing inflexibility. Usage enforcement, copy protection and theft prevention can guard against these threats, but they are only the first step toward unlocking the full potential value of source code.
In this session, SafeNet's CTO of software rights management, Michael Zunke, will discuss the operational and security challenges facing today's embedded systems developers, and provide best-practices advice for implementing modular, secure software monetization solutions that address these challenges and help organizations make the most of their intellectual property.
The SafeNet embedded software monetization team will also be onsite at Design West to answer questions and demonstrate the power of software licensing and entitlement management when applied to an intelligent hardware device. The team will be utilizing a live race track to demonstrate how licensing can be used to control hardware at the feature-level, in this case Carrera Slot Cars, in order to improve customer lifecycle management, enhance packaging capabilities and reduce operating costs. The team will also be greeting visitors with snacks and margaritas, offering the chance to win a remote-control Porsche 911, and giving away gas cards at its booth (#2331).
