Salinas Police Officers Association Demands Police Chief, Mayor, & City Council Address Public Safety Crisis
Violent crime escalates as Police staffing reduced to 1970s level
SALINAS, Calif., July 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Salinas Police Officers Association will formally request that the City of Salinas immediately implement a realistic, results oriented action plan to counter the city's dramatic rise in crime. Last year, homicides increased in Salinas by 90% when compared to 2012. Over the same time period, rape increased 85%, auto theft increased 79% and aggravated assault increased 79%. This past weekend, three shootings tied up nearly the entire department, leaving calls for service unanswered for hours. The unchecked rise in crime is occurring during a police officer staffing crisis and on the cusp of a city budget being approved with little to no ability to implement thorough community policing or crime prevention.
