SANS Institute Shows Organizations How to Avoid Becoming the Next Victim of a Data Breach
Provides Insight into Why Data Breaches Occur and How to Stop Them
BETHESDA, Md., Jan. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Target, Snapchat and Skype, if the start of the New Year is any indication, 2014 will be a busy year for data breaches. Despite spending millions of dollars and man hours on security, organizations are still being compromised. In response to industry demand for additional training on why attacks are occurring and how they can be stopped, SANS Institute has increased the number of SEC401 Security Essentials Training courses it will offer during 2014. SEC401 Security Essentials teaches organizations the right things that need to be done to keep them secure.
"Organizations are doing good things in terms of security, but not the right things. Good things will lay a solid foundation, whereas the right things will stop an organization from being headline news in the Wall Street Journal," states Dr. Eric Cole, Fellow and Cyber Defense Lead for the SANS Institute. "Organizations are not aligning their security with how the adversary compromises an organization. For security to be effective it must be aligned with the threat vectors that attackers are using to break in. SANS' SEC401 Security Essentials focuses on properly defending and detecting a variety of attack vectors."
SEC401 teaches individuals the essential skills and techniques needed to protect and secure an organization's critical information assets and business systems. Course author for SEC401 Security Essentials, Dr. Cole, will teach students all about risk-based security which includes how to assess an organization's risk, understand the priority of a risk, and the most cost-effective way of reducing the risk(s). Students will also learn how to build a security roadmap that can scale today and into the future.
SEC401 Security Essentials will be offered at SANS' top training events throughout the year. For those unable to travel, SEC401 Security Essentials will be available online this February via live simulcast in conjunction with SANS CyberCon Spring 2014. SANS CyberCon is a live online training event that meets in virtual classrooms, allowing students to interact directly with their classmates and instructors; no travel required.
