Shiply Backs MP Robert Halfon's Call To Show Fuel Duty On Receipts
Shiply.com, supports MP for Harrow Robert Halfon's proposed bill to allow motorists to see the amount of fuel duty paid on receipts.
LONDON, Oct. 25, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Shiply.com, the online transport marketplace, today welcomed Robert Halfon 's proposed bill to allow motorists to see the amount of fuel duty paid on receipts.
Mr Halfon's bill, which was outlined to MPs in the Commons, was described by himself as being very simple and that "taxes should be clear to the people who pay them".
In the UK, motorists understand they have to pay a duty and VAT when paying for fuel, however only VAT is currently shown on receipts and not fuel duty.
With the current fuel duty sitting at 57.96p for unleaded petrol and the net selling price before tax of 119.29p (figures from FairFuelUK), the fuel duty percentage is 48.57%, the highest in Europe. Motorists in other European countries enjoy much lower fuel duties, with French paying 36.76p (36.9%), German 39.34p (36.6%) and the Irish 41.74p (41.2%).
Transparency of fuel duty has been a hot topic recently, with FairFuelUK's campaign to support MP Robert Halfon 's bill notching up 15,000 signatures on a petition particularly for this issue.
Robert Matthams , Managing Director of Shiply, with over 55,000 haulage companies as members, said: "Given that Britons are paying the highest fuel duty rate in Europe, they should have the right to know exactly what they are paying."
Founded in 2008, Shiply matches people needing to move goods with transport companies going there anyway. Over 25% of lorries run completely empty of cargo and over 50% run only part-full. By enabling consumers and businesses to make use of this spare capacity, Shiply.com dramatically cuts down CO2 emissions, and increases the profitability of transport companies and saves the consumer up to 75%.
