Simplicity for Children, Inc. Voluntarily Recalls Cribs
READING, Pa., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In conjunction with
the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Simplicity for
Children, Inc. (Simplicity), a manufacturer of infant bedding and other
products, today announced the voluntary recall of approximately 1 million
cribs with older drop-side hardware. Owners of these cribs are asked to
contact the company so that they may receive a retrofit package that will
address the safety concerns that led to this recall.
"Simplicity strives to make safe products; that is our number 1
priority. That's why we worked with the CPSC to take this action," said
Simplicity President Ken Waldman.
The CPSC and Simplicity are principally concerned with failure in the
"drop-side" of the crib when it is incorrectly assembled, which, according
to the CPSC, has led to three fatalities. "The CPSC has advised us that
they are aware of two incidents in which a properly assembled crib suffered
a drop-side failure. We believe the other reported incidents were the
result of either improper assembly or other external factors," Waldman
said.
"It is important that every parent who owns a Simplicity crib is
absolutely confident that it is safe," he added.
"According to First Candle, a leading promoter of infant health,
infants who sleep in an adult bed with their parents are up to 40 times
more likely to die through suffocation or other means than infants who
sleep in a crib," Waldman said. "Parents need to know that babies are
safest in a separate sleeping space designed for them."
The recalled cribs were manufactured through early 2006. None of the
cribs that Simplicity currently supplies to stores are involved in this
recall.
The recalled Simplicity crib models include: Aspen 3 in 1, Aspen 4 in
1, Nursery-in-a-Box, Crib N Changer Combo, Chelsea and Pooh 4 in 1. The
recall also involves the following Simplicity cribs that used the Graco
logo: Aspen 3 in 1, Ultra 3 in 1, Ultra 4 in1, Ultra 5 in 1, Whitney and
the Trio.
The recalled cribs have one of the following model numbers, which can
be found on the envelope attached to the mattress support and on the label
attached to the headboard: 4600, 4605, 4705, 5000, 8000, 8324, 8800, 8740,
8910, 8994, 8050, 8750, 8760, and 8996.
