Statement by the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), on Canadian Tire Corporation's Support for the Canadian Olympic Committee

OTTAWA, Jan. 23, 2013 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate Canadian Tire Corporation for taking a leadership role with its generous commitment to helping Canada's athletes and to the Olympic movement in this country. Its support demonstrates the kind of leadership that will help Canada continue to achieve podium success.

As the single largest contributor to sport in this country, our Government recognizes that the Olympic Games provide Canada with the opportunity to promote Canadian culture and athleticism, while sharing our values of openness, equality, and respect for human rights.

Support from the private sector, like that announced today, will play a key role in ensuring that Canada maintains its status as a leading sport nation on the international stage.

I would also like to thank the Canadian Olympic Committee for its ongoing dedication to promoting Olympic ideals and excellence.

As Minister of State (Sport), I wish all of our athletes the best of luck as they continue their pursuit of excellence as we head toward the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
