NEW YORK, Aug. 4, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- For most Americans, feeling safe is an imperative.
A Sterling Talent Solutions (Sterling) survey of 1,077 American adults reveals that people especially expect to feel safe in everyday situations. The top five places that respondents expect to feel safe are:
- At the doctor 83%
- At work 78%
- Dining at a restaurant 70%
- At home with a service professional 68%
- On an airplane 65%
Only 5% said they never expect to feel safe. Older generations are especially likely to see safety as a given. More of those ages 55+ than those 18-54 expect to feel safe when seeing a doctor (90% vs. 79%), dining at a restaurant (78% vs. 65%) or flying on an airplane (91% vs. 63%).
"If you pay attention to the news at all, it's easy to see why Americans today are highly concerned with their safety," said Clare Hart, Sterling Talent Solutions' chief executive officer. "In fact, 81% believe that feeling safe at all times is a right, not a mere privilege. 'Public safety' was even identified as one of the top five issues that should be discussed in the presidential debates."
One tool many Americans believe promotes safety is the background check. Ninety percent of respondents said they could think of at least one profession for which they'd only want to interact with someone who'd undergone a background check. Nearly two in three (65%) feel that background checks provide a sense of safety to people, with 59% calling background checks "essential" to safety.
Americans are particularly concerned that candidates for jobs that could impact their or their children's safety be closely vetted. The top 10 professions that the most Americans feel candidates should undergo background checks for are:
- Law enforcement officer (76%)
- Doctor (74%)
- Airline pilot (66%)
- Lawyer (64%)
- In-home care provider (63%)
- Teacher (62%)
- Nurse (62%)
- Pharmacist (62%)
- Financial advisor (54%)
- Babysitter (52%)
The survey was commissioned by Sterling and conducted by Kelton Global—a leading global insights firm that works with more than 100 of the Fortune 500 and thousands of smaller companies and organizations—between Dec. 28, 2015, and Jan. 11, 2016. The margin of error is equal to +/- 3.0%.
