Although healthy people rarely contract listeriosis, it can be very serious for those who are pregnant or those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, but infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth.
