Student Residency Program Planned by the National Association of Specialty Pharmacy (NASP)

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Nov. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The National Association of Specialty Pharmacy™ (NASP™) announced today it is establishing an accredited academic residency program to facilitate the transition of undergraduate pharmacy students into Specialty Pharmacy.

Students participating will have the opportunity to access multiple stakeholder organizations in the Specialty Pharmacy sector, including specialty pharmacies in hospitals, acute care institutions, infusion centers, retail pharmacies, chain pharmacies and oncology institutions among others. The program also has components that take students into manufacturer and insurer organizations.

"We have received solid support for this program from NASP's academic and specialty pharmacy constituents, as well as other collaborative partner organizations. By building collaboration among all organizations involved in specialty pharmacy, NASP delivers the benefits and services needed to promote the highest standards of care and improved patient outcomes. This new student residency program is well-aligned with NASP's mission and holds the promise of better patient care models in the future," said Gary M Cohen, BSPharm, RPh, CSP, CEO of NASP.

According to Cohen, the industry is moving toward creating an environment of "precision" pharmacy. As we become more sophisticated and develop better patient management models, it is important to provide a bridge for students to be able to adopt skills sets to better prepare them for their futures.

"The way we educate our pharmacy students is changing and it is important to have accredited residency programs that provide a pathway for our students to move into areas of specialty and precision pharmacy," said Dr. Kathy D. Webster, PharmD, PhD, Founding Dean and Professor, Keck Graduate Institute, School of Pharmacy.

NASP, founded in 2012, represents specialty pharmacy professionals in all practice settings. Its mission is to provide educational programs, certification curriculum and professional networking forums for healthcare professionals to promote the safe and appropriate use of specialty medications.
