Superior Petroleum Company Supports "Hearts for the Hungry," a Relief Effort to Feed Starving Children in Haiti, With Help Through the BP Fueling Communities Program
"Hearts for the Hungry" believes the hope for Haiti's future is an educated youth.
PITTSBURGH, Nov. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- United and in conjunction with BP's Fueling Communities Program, Superior Petroleum Company donated $10,000 to support "Hearts for the Hungry" and its ongoing relief efforts for children in the terrible residual aftermath of last winter's earthquake in Haiti. Led by Pastor Micah McMillen of Old Mahoning Baptist Church in Home, PA the organization provides food for children in the schools of Haiti.
The Work
"Hearts for the Hungry" goal is to provide hope for the future of those we serve. They offer a school feeding program consisting of one nutritious meal a day throughout the year which is usually the only meal the child will have that day. Pastor McMillen said, "Having been in Haiti over sixty days this past year, I have seen firsthand the overwhelming need and endless opportunities."
What They Accomplish
"Hearts for the Hungry" improves the ability of the student to learn in school. They encourage families to keep their child in school. They promote physical and mental health through good nutrition. When funds are available, they support schools with materials needed to encourage education and support the teachers with the tools they need such as paper, chalkboards, chairs, books and other necessary materials. At times, they assist in improving school buildings. "Hearts for the Hungry" wants churches and organizations to know that they can support an entire school through their "Adopt-A-School Program." A church or organization would be able to send and receive correspondence, and build and relationship with the teachers and children of that school. For more information on that program call (814) 873-1397.
Brought to Light
Superior Petroleum Company learned intimately of the plight of Haiti's children and the efforts of "Hearts for the Hungry" from Natalie and Aaron Price. They are an inspiring young beautiful married couple, who have held fundraisers in the Pizza Roma chain of restaurants, owned by Natalie's father. At one point Aaron rolled up his sleeves and accompanied Pastor McMillen to Haiti and he worked in hospitals and orphanages in the city of Cap Haitian.
