Sustainability and Mitigation Key Themes for Georgia-Pacific Gypsum at Greenbuild 2009

Industry leader showcases 12-week mold test results; point of view on synergistic building practices; and interactive Architect Design Studio tool (Booth #3751)

PHOENIX, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Twenty-five years after transforming the gypsum building products industry with its first installation of fiberglass mat boards, Georgia-Pacific Gypsum LLC is continuing its legacy of innovation, leadership and sustainability with a number of initiatives being showcased this week at the Greenbuild 2009 International Conference & Expo.

"The Synergy of Sustainability and Mitigation" is a key theme for Georgia-Pacific Gypsum's presence at Greenbuild 2009, where the company's products, services and points of view will be on display at booth 3751.

Among the news and information Georgia-Pacific Gypsum will spotlight are:

  • Two of its premier Dens((TM)) interior gypsum panel products are the first in the industry to pass a 12-week mold resistance test - which is three times longer and much more stringent than the current industry testing standard.
  • The availability of a position paper "The Synergy of Sustainability and Mitigation," developed by Barry Reid, LEED AP, Product Development Marketing Manager, Georgia-Pacific Gypsum
  • The introduction of the Georgia-Pacific Design Studio, a web-based BIM object development tool offered by Architect's Design Studio(TM).

"Our products - and our people - continue to lead innovation in the building products industry," said Mike Clay, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Georgia-Pacific Gypsum. "Greenbuild is a perfect venue to convey this information, since, as a member of the U.S. Green Building Council, we share a commitment to motivating the industry to use methods and materials for constructing cost-effective, durable and energy-efficient green buildings."

12-Week Mold Test

DensArmor Plus(® )High-Performance Interior Panel* and DensShield(® )Tile Backer each passed a rigorous 12-week mold resistance test, conducted in accordance with the Modified U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ASTM D 6329 ** protocol. The test - three times longer than ASTM D3273, the current industry standard - was conducted by an independent third party, RTI International, at its facilities in Research Triangle Park, N.C., between February and June 2009.

No other gypsum products manufacturer has announced test results showing zero mold growth for 12 full weeks for any product. For more information, visit http://www.gp.com/build/newsRelease.aspx?NewsID=7937.

The Synergy of Sustainability and Mitigation

"The Synergy of Sustainability and Mitigation" - a position paper written by Barry Reid -- stresses the importance of building to last, using the best and most efficient products and processes throughout. While sustainability and mitigation are concepts that architects, specifiers and builders should address and embrace in building construction, too often sustainable practices end up conflicting with efforts that address mitigation.

Reid suggests that these two important issues should be addressed simultaneously at all stages of the building process - from design through construction. This combined effort makes effective use of sustainable products and practices while also taking steps to mitigate weather-related problems that may occur.

Georgia-Pacific Design Studio

In collaboration with McGraw-Hill, Georgia-Pacific Gypsum is launching Georgia-Pacific Design Studio, a web-based BIM object development tool, created by The DeMichele Group as the Architect's Design Studio(TM). The Georgia-Pacific Design Studio allows designers to access technical literature, CAD drawings, fire designs and other information. It incorporates Georgia-Pacific Gypsum products and technical literature, and enables designers to manipulate objects and change design parameters.

Users can keep the object in the Georgia-Pacific Design Studio for illustrative purposes or they can export the objects into Autodesk Revit and into the project. The tool includes non-Georgia-Pacific objects, such as steel studs, insulation, air and water barriers and claddings. Visit www.architectsdesignstudio.com/ADS/gp.
