Long blamed for fostering inequities in the quality of public education, Illinois' school funding system will be challenged Wednesday in a lawsuit filed by property taxpayers who say it discriminates against them financially based on where they live.

The lawsuit charges that the state's method for funding education violates the equal protection clause of the Illinois Constitution because it forces home owners in lower-income communities to pay higher property rates for their schools than those who own homes of similar value in more affluent areas.
