TechRadium Expanding 'IRIS' Availability as States Order Campus Security Studies
HOUSTON, May 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- One month after the deaths
of students and professors at Virginia Tech University, a growing number of
governors across the United States are ordering statewide studies of
security methods on university and college campuses, with authorities
expected to examine new safety systems.
TechRadium, Inc., of Sugar Land, Texas, which holds patents on cutting-
edge electronic emergency notification systems, says it will take part in
as many studies as possible and will demonstrate its Immediate Response
Information System -- IRIS -- to show how even the largest campus
populations can be alerted immediately in emergency situations.
In Florida, Governor Charlie Crist has created a task force to explore
campus security in the aftermath of the slayings at Virginia Tech.
TechRadium's IRIS is already in use in public schools in several Florida
counties with 750,000 students, staff and faculty.
In Virginia, Governor Tim Kaine has ordered an investigation of the
killings at Virginia Tech, and officials in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania,
Illinois and numerous other states are also looking at improved security
methods.
IRIS is in use in a number of Texas school systems, both public and
parochial, and in other states in addition to Florida. Following the
Virginia Tech tragedy, TechRadium has received increased interest in IRIS,
regarded as the most advanced and comprehensive emergency notification
system available in the United States today.
"TechRadium's patented IRIS system has already proven successful in
seven counties in Florida using the system," Ryan Rodkey, President and
Chief Executive Officer of TechRadium, said. "Indeed, one public school
system in the Tampa Bay area put the system into emergency use only a few
days after Virginia Tech."
A high school near Tampa in Hillsborough County, Florida, used its IRIS
system to alert parents who had heard widespread reports of a shootout in
the school area.
"Fortunately, the rumors proved to be false -- there was no shootout --
but it was very important to notify parents and students of the situation,
and IRIS performed well in every respect," Mr. Rodkey said.
The Tampa Tribune, reporting on the incident, quoted a school official
on the emergency use of IRIS: "After Virginia Tech, I don't think anybody
has any patience for security issues. We pushed the button."
With hundreds of students leaving school, the principal was able to
alert parents and students immediately that the rumor of a shootout was
false and that the school was safe. "That's the best possible use of our
system, assuring safety," Mr. Rodkey said.
Florida's legislature recently approved new multi-million dollar
allocations that will enable to Florida Department of Education to expand
its present pilot programs from the seven counties using IRIS to a
considerably larger number of schools systems over the state. TechRadium
will seek to put IRIS in service in each of the additional counties, Mr.
Rodkey said.
TechRadium's patented system is distinguished from other conventional
alert programs by a number of features, including not only instant
notification but also instant response, enabling authorities to know
immediately who received messages and who didn't. IRIS sends messages
through not one but multiple communications devices including telephones,
cell phones, e-mail, pagers, faxes, PDAs, satellite devices, LED signs and
virtually any communications device connected to internet or telephone
networks. IRIS's information is sent in eight other languages in addition
to English, including Spanish, French and Chinese.
TechRadium's system is not only available to educational institutions,
but is also targeted to government groups and buildings, corporations,
local businesses and others. TechRadium recently announced an agreement
with Qwest Communications International, Inc., to supply IRIS to federal
offices and other government facilities. The company also announced an
agreement with ADT Security Services to distribute IRIS to universities,
colleges and schools.
