Teddy Gleason Scholarship Winners Selected for 2008; Eight Students Will Receive $48,000 in Educational Grants
NEW YORK, June 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The International
Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO and New York Shipping Association, Inc.
today announced the eight winners of the 2008 Teddy Gleason Scholarships.
The two trustees of the Scholarship Program, ILA President John Bowers and
NYSA President Frank McDonough, introduced the students at a luncheon on
June 24, 2008 at Fraunces Tavern in Lower Manhattan.
All eight students are dependents of ILA members working for NYSA
member companies in the Greater Metropolitan area. The NYSA-ILA Scholarship
Fund, named in honor of the late ILA president Teddy Gleason, is open to
dependents of active and retired ILA members in the Port of New York and
New Jersey. This is the twenty-eighth annual scholarship program. Students
will receive an annual grant of $6,000 per year for each one of four years
in college.
The 2008 Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners are as follows:
Christina M. DeCosta: Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph DeCosta of
Mountainside, NJ. Mr. DeCosta is a member of ILA Local 1235 working at APM
Terminals. Christina plans to attend SUNY - Stony Brook in Stony Brook, New
York.
Jessica A. Laso: Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Paul Laso of Manalapan, New
Jersey. Mr. Laso is a member of ILA Local 1235 working at Maher Terminals,
Inc. Jessica plans to attend The University of Rhode Island in Kingston,
Rhode Island.
Nancy J. Marroquin: Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Miguel Marroquin of Union
City, New Jersey. Mr. Marroquin is a member of ILA Local 1588 working at
Global Terminal Containers. Nancy plans to attend Fordham University in
Bronx, New York.
Tasha E. Miley: Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Randy Miley of Glenwood, New
Jersey. Mr. Miley is a member of ILA Local 1804-1 working at APM Terminals,
Inc. Tasha plans to attend The American University in Washington, DC.
Lucia Oubina: Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jesus Oubina of Linden. Mr. Oubina
is a member of ILA Local 1235 working at APM Terminals, Inc. Lucia plans to
attend The College of New Jersey in Ewing, New Jersey.
Angela L. Pagliaro: Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Sergio Pagliaro of North
Brunswick, New Jersey. Mr. Pagliaro is a member of ILA Local 1804-1 working
at Maher Terminals, Inc. Angela plans to attend SUNY-Binghamton in
Binghamton, New York.
Alyssa Reyes: Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jose Reyes of Berkeley Heights,
New Jersey. Mr. Reyes is a member of ILA Local 1235 working at APM
Terminals, Inc. Alyssa plans to attend the College of Saint Elizabeth in
Morristown, New Jersey.
Monica Vilacha: Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jose Vilacha of Hazlet, New
Jersey. Mr. Vilacha is a member of ILA Local 1235 working at APM Terminals,
Inc. Monica plans to attend The University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware.
The Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of
academic performance and aptitude testing among other determinations. The
scholarships are available to qualified applicants who wish to continue
education at undergraduate, apprentice or training programs at any
accredited colleges, universities and other institutions of higher
learning. An independent agency - the College Scholarship Service based in
Princeton, New Jersey - makes the selection of the scholarship winners.
The eight Teddy Gleason Scholarship winners join 32 other students
currently enrolled in colleges and universities who were previously awarded
these generous grants. The scholarship program was introduced in 1981
following collective bargaining between the ILA and employers represented
by NYSA and it provides $192,000 in yearly assistance for 32 students.
