Texas Governor Rick Perry Designates May 9-17 Texas Travel and Tourism Week, in Recognition of Travel and Tourism's Significant Economic Impact

AUSTIN, Texas, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- In recognition of the Texas travel industry and its significant contribution to the Texas economy, Governor Rick Perry has proclaimed May 9-17, 2009 Texas Travel and Tourism Week. Texas Travel and Tourism Week coincides with National Travel and Tourism Week in which cities, states and travel-related businesses nationwide celebrate the value and economic impact of travel and tourism.

Texas' number one ambassador, First Lady Anita Perry, is also dedicated to promoting Texas tourism and economic development. Through her work, the Lone Star State continues to be one of the top three travel destinations in the U.S.

Along the Texas Gulf Coast, a variety of destinations offer fun in the sun, water sports, cultural and historical experiences, dining and entertainment. Tourism has long been recognized as a powerful economic development tool in Texas, generating revenue and jobs. In 2007, travelers generated nearly $57 billion in direct travel spending in the state, and the travel industry employed 534,000 Texans. Travel expenditures generated $2.8 billion in state taxes and $994 million in local taxes. Texas is also one of the most visited states in the United States.
