The Elks Help Students Achieve Their Dreams with $50,000 College Scholarships

CHICAGO, May 1, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A scuba diver. A jazz singer. A football star. These are profiles of some of the Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student top scholars. Thanks to their ENF scholarships, these students have the opportunity to pursue these interests and more at their dream schools.

Being awarded an MVS scholarship is no easy feat. A total of 20,548 high school seniors applied this year. Of these, 480 runners up will receive $4,000 scholarships. The top 20 scholars attended the inaugural Leadership Weekend last weekend in Chicago, the home of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks headquarters, to interview with a panel of national judges for the chance to receive a top award of $30,000, $40,000 or $50,000. Each of the top 10 will receive a college scholarship of at least $20,000.

In addition to interviewing for top awards, the 20 scholars got to know one another and the Elks and gave back to Chicago veterans by volunteering at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center.

After the weekend, two scholars—Eric Kim and Autumn Pack—emerged as $50,000 scholarship winners. In the fall, Eric, of Hoover, Alabama, will study biochemistry at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Autumn, of Kingston, Ohio, will use her scholarship to attend Ohio University, majoring in psychology.

Eric, Autumn and the other National Finalists are grateful for the Elks National Foundation for giving them the opportunity to participate in this life-changing weekend and the chance to pursue their dreams.

"Thank you for opening so many doors to me as I transition into college," says Eric. "It frees my parents from the financial burden of sending me to college and gives me the opportunity to be a vessel of change at the University of Alabama."

In 2013-14, the ENF allocated $3.74 million for college scholarships. The ENF also offers $4,000 Legacy Award college scholarships to 250 children and grandchildren of Elks. Visit www.elks.org/enf/scholars to meet the 750 MVS and Legacy Awards scholars and learn more about ENF scholarships.
