WASHINGTON, Oct. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Newseum will offer free admission to members of the military and their families on Veterans Day weekend, Friday, Nov. 11 to Sunday, Nov. 13. Active and retired members of the military and up to three family members are invited to visit the Newseum as the country pauses to recognize their service.
The Newseum also will offer special Veterans Day weekend programming:
- Friday and Sunday, 1 and 4 p.m.: Gallery talks in the Time Warner World News Gallery will focus on press freedom around the world and how reporters cover conflict.
- Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.: "Collection Connection" in The New York Times – Ochs-Sulzberger Family Great Hall of News will give visitors an up-close look at Newseum artifacts, including a Civil War press badge, a deck of cards created by the Defense Intelligence Agency that features Saddam Hussein as the ace of spades, battlefield cameras – and much more.
- Saturday, 2:30 p.m.: "Inside Media: The Anthrax Attacks on America" with author and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Willman in the Documentary Theater.
- Sunday, 2:30 p.m.: "Inside Media: Covering the Military" with CNN Pentagon correspondent Chris Lawrence in the Documentary Theater.
"The 45 words of the First Amendment, etched in marble on the front of the Newseum, represent just a few of the freedoms and rights our men and women in uniform fight for every day," said Jim Duff of the Newseum. "We hope many of them will be able to visit on Veterans Day weekend as we recognize their service."
To take advantage of the offer, service members should present military IDs or another form of military-service credentials, or wear their uniforms. No IDs will be required for family members. Tickets will be available only at the Newseum admission desk on the day of the visit and are valid Nov. 11 to 13. For more information, visit newseum.org.
