In celebration of the 200th birthday of the 16th President, the Shapell Manuscript Foundation is pleased to announce the loan of never before publicly seen manuscripts from its Lincoln Collection to the Library of Congress. Several of the Foundation's treasures are currently featured in the Library's traveling exhibit, presently at the Newberry Library in Chicago until the end of the year.
These manuscripts include the first-ever public pairing of 11-year old Grace Bedell's letter to Lincoln suggesting that he grow a beard, and Lincoln's humble reply; his condolence letter to Miss Fanny McCullough, on the death of her father at the Battle of Fredericksburg; and the blood-stained notes of Lincoln's family physician describing the President's tragic final hours - his decline, death and autopsy.
"With Malice Toward None: The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition" opened in Washington, D.C., at the Library of Congress, on Lincoln's 200th birthday, February 12, 2009. The Exhibition, now in Chicago, includes prominent Lincoln and Lincoln-related autograph letters, photographs, documents and artifacts. After a two-month run in Sacramento, California, "With Malice Toward None" is slated to travel to the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis, Indiana (Feb. 12 - Ap. 11, 2010); the Atlanta History Center, in Atlanta, George, Sept. 4 - Nov. 6, 2010; and the Durham Western Heritage Museum in Omaha, Nebraska (Jan. 8 - Mar. 5, 2011).
While the scope and outreach of the Shapell Manuscript Foundation includes the lending of manuscripts to international exhibitions, this is the first time that so many of its Lincolniana treasures have been exhibited in one place. The Newberry Library show is a rare opportunity to personally view those famous Lincoln letters, photos and manuscripts which, until now, have gone virtually unseen.
