PHILADELPHIA, April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The oldest and largest high
school rowing competition in the United States is celebrating its 80th
anniversary this year. Over 5,000 student rowers from 180 high schools from
around the nation will travel to Philadelphia for the 2006 Stotesbury Cup
Regatta (May 19-20), the most prestigious high school rowing event of the
 spring rowing season.
Organized by the Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia, the Stotesbury Cup
Regatta has been the pinnacle of the high school rowing season since 1927.
Crews race on the 1,500-meter course on the Schuylkill River, from above
the Strawberry Mansion Bridge downstream to the Columbia Bridge, in the
historic Fairmount Park. The regatta is made up of 26 championship events
based on the boat size and the grade level of the rowers.
The Stotesbury Cup Regatta starts on Friday morning (May 19) with time
trials for all teams. From each time trial, the top 12 or 18 boats advance
to semi-finals on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Top boats from the
semi- finals advance to finals on Saturday afternoon (May 20) starting at
1:00 pm. The 15,000 cheering spectators contribute to the action on the
water by cheering and encouraging their favorite schools to the finish
line. The students will battle to return to their high school with the
coveted Stotesbury trophies, and the recognition of being regatta
 champions.
"Over the 80 years of the Stotesbury Cup Regatta over 75,000 student
athletes have competed in the event," Clete Graham, Commodore of the
Schuylkill Navy said. "Many of the athletes that participate continue to
row through their college years and beyond. There are many Olympic athletes
and world-class rowers that got their competitive start at the Stotesbury
 Cup Regatta."
