The Washington State Medical Association Commends Governor Gregoire for Suspending Zero Tolerance Policy for Medicaid Patients
SEATTLE, April 2, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Washington State Medical Association (WSMA) would like to applaud Governor Gregoire for suspending plans to implement the state's Zero Tolerance Policy that would have denied payment for treating Medicaid patients in the emergency department. We are committed to protecting quality patient care and patient safety. The WSMA, the Washington State Hospital Association and the Washington Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians have been urging lawmakers to approve a more reasonable alternative that would reduce emergency visits by extensive case management of frequent users, requirements for timely follow-up by primary care physicians, controls on narcotic prescribing, and real-time emergency visit tracking. This alternative plan is currently drafted into the House budget plan and we urge lawmakers to pass a budget that includes this important plan.
