Theater Is Lethal In Thriller Deadly Play By M.K. Perkins
WESTON, Conn., Dec. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Suspense novelist M.K. Perkins knows how hard a life in the theater can be, although the Deadly part is a figment of her imagination.
Inspired by her own experiences as an actress, DEADLY PLAY is the story of Kate Sachs , a struggling young actress in the midst of rehearsals for a Broadway tryout in Westport, CT. Her life changes instantaneously when she steps into the actors' lounge late one night and discovers a man in a mask lurking in the shadows and her director unconscious in a corner. The man almost kills her, but runs away when he hears Producer David Sobel calling her name. An ambulance rushes her director to the hospital while Detective Matt Warren questions Kate and David. His sloppy, easy-going manner is in direct contrast with David's too well groomed self-absorption. After the interrogation, Kate goes home to her loft in Norwalk, reluctantly offering David her spare bedroom since he lives in NYC and the last train departed hours ago. Kate knows he's arrogant and vain, and is annoyed at herself for finding his good looks so attractive.
Relationships are not Kate's strong suit. Since the death of her boyfriend, nightmares intrude anytime she's attracted to someone; this time is no different. She awakens before dawn and drives to the beach for a jog in hopes of dissipating the dream's effect. But another nightmare awaits her there: the man in the mask. She manages to escape him again, never anticipating the vicious rampage that is to follow. Her indomitable family do their best to protect her, but it's Kate's photojournalist mother who provides the clue to the man in the mask's identity while photographing a street fair. At last, Kate knows what he looks like. And now the hunter becomes the hunted.
"My road to publication was interesting," Perkins says. "It took awhile to find an agent, which unfortunately coincided with the implosion of the publishing industry. We got some good feedback from editors, but none were willing to take a chance on a debut author in today's market. Finally my agent suggested that I self-publish DEADLY PLAY and build up a readership. That turned out to be great advice. With the help of Thrillerfest, the International Thriller Writers' yearly conference, I learned how to navigate the publishing world and hone the book through workshops given by veteran authors such as Lisa Gardner and Lee Childs ."
About the Author
M.K. Perkins has been a commercial writer and freelance journalist for most of her life, including her years as an actress when she wrote in her spare time. Like her protagonist, Kate Sachs , she knows what it's like to be a struggling actress, having appeared on stage and in dozens of soap operas and movies as an extra. Thanks to the research she did for her book, they're both pretty good shots with a handgun too. Unlike Kate, she never landed a starring role on television; so to make a living she started a consulting firm specializing in training (with a theatrical flair!), catering to firms on Wall Street. But that gypsy in her soul, as one friend dubbed her creative muse, was only in hiding. She popped out one day and refused to leave her alone. DEADLY PLAY is the result of her persistence. M.K. Perkins lives in Fairfield County, CT with her husband and daughter, and is working on a sequel.
