Three Students from Laureate Network Institutions Selected to Attend Sixth Annual Clinton Global Initiative University Delegates represent the strength and diversity of Laureate's student body

BALTIMORE, April 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Three students were selected from Laureate International Universities network institutions to attend the sixth annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) at Washington University in St. Louis on April 5-7. The undergraduate and graduate students selected to attend the conference demonstrated a strong commitment to social action in their local communities and are among the top students in their programs at their respective institutions. This year's participants include:

  • Constantinos Constantinou, an MBA student from European University Cyprus (EUC)
  • Glauco Canalis, a graduate student at Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano (NABA) in Italy
  • Natalia Maria Alvarado Palma, an undergraduate student at Universidad Latina de Costa Rica (ULatina)

For the past three years, Laureate has been proud to sponsor exceptional students to attend this prestigious annual event. This year, CGI U is bringing together more than 1,000 students from all 50 U.S. states and more than 75 countries. The students will have the opportunity to hear from prominent business and nonprofit leaders as well as government officials.  Students will attend working sessions to explore the event's five focus topics: education, the environment and climate change, peace and human rights, poverty alleviation, and public health.

"I am continually impressed by the innovative and inspiring work of our Laureate students — and these three CGI U participants are no exception," said Douglas L. Becker, Chairman and CEO of Laureate Education, Inc. "Every year, our students very much appreciate the opportunity to attend CGI U and always return to their campuses with new ideas, strong connections and an affirmation that they can make a positive impact on their communities."

Each Laureate participant has pledged to complete an individual CGI U Commitment to Action, a measurable, tangible initiative that makes a positive contribution to society. Commitments from this year's three students are focused on increasing access to education for children and teens; awareness and action involving the current employment crisis in parts of the world; and advocacy, through film, about human rights and poverty.  Previous commitments from Laureate students have included starting a hospice in Belize, creating a prosthetic device to help stroke victims regain mobility and using social media to recruit volunteers for a natural disaster cleanup in Malaysia.
