Time to 'Get Focused' at Exploration Summer Programs

Kids spend two weeks with chefs, vets, emergency doctors, TV-movie producers

NORWOOD, Mass., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Exploration Summer Programs, open to students around the world, is offering a series of two-week focus courses this July for children entering grades 6 to 9, providing an in-depth experience in the culinary arts, emergency medicine, veterinary science and the television and movie industry.

The new Exploration Focus Programs will give kids an opportunity to spend time in an actual studio, commercial kitchen or medical lab, working hands-on with professionals and getting a unique view of what happens in these dynamic fields.

"Imagine if you could take two weeks and learn how to produce a cinema-quality movie or learn about emergency care from ER doctors," said Moira Kelly, executive director of "Explo." "That is what these courses offer, as well as a chance to cook with professional chefs or learn advanced care for animals with veterinarians."

Founded in 1976, "Explo" is a series of academic summer enrichment courses far different from a traditional summer camp. Students entering grades 4 through 12 participate in fun and exciting projects in the visual and performing arts, science, politics, government, business, technology and more. It is run on the campuses of Wellesley College, Yale University and St. Mark's School in Southborough, MA.

Students from New England, across the United States and from 60 countries have attended Explo including Brazil, China, India, Israel, Nigeria and Russia. Explo has become an international meeting place where the students arrive as strangers but leave as friends, having learned more about each other and themselves.

In the Focus Program's Emergency Medicine course, offered to kids entering grades 6 and 7 at the St. Mark's School, students will spend time inside state-of-the-art labs, work with a team to respond to trauma situations and learn how to save a life.

In the Veterinary Science program, also offered at St. Mark's to students entering grades 6 and 7, students will work with professional veterinarians, diagnose animal diseases, set broken limbs and launch their career in animal health care.

Older kids entering grades 8, 9 and 10 can enroll in the Culinary Arts course, offered on the campus of Wellesley College. There they'll learn to slice and simmer while working in a fully stocked commercial kitchen with critically acclaimed chef Jerome Picca, owner of the renowned Small Plates Restaurant in Cambridge, MA.

The TV & Movie Industry course is also open to students entering grades 8, 9 and 10 and offered at Wellesley College. Instructor-In-Residence Laurie Goldstein, an award-winning producer and former executive at HBO, NBC, and Universal, leads the program. Students will work in the production studio of a local cable television station, shoot and edit film with professional equipment and produce a "featurette" to be screened at a local independent cinema.

"These Focus courses will amount to two of the most exciting weeks these kids will spend this summer," said Kelly. "They'll leave with skills they didn't have before and perhaps a career to pursue."
